TCF: How Can Art Amplify Academics in Classical Education

Don’t just add an art class to your classical studies. Let art multiply your efforts by integrating art into academic subjects. Arts integration makes a classical education much richer. Art can make facts memorable and relatable. It engages students through their senses and cultivates creative thinking, and thoughtful art projects spur students to think more deeply about the subjects.

Artist and Classical Educator Courtney Sanford demonstrates how you can integrate fine art activities into academic subjects such as history, literature, and science in the grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric stages of learning.

Courtney Sanford spent 16 years classically educating her own children and tutoring others and writing and designing resources for Classical Conversations and CiRCE Institute. In 2020, she opened the Delightful Art Co., an Online Art School that offers arts-integrated classes, resources, and retreats. She has a Degree in Graphic Design from NCSU and is an adjunct professor of fine arts at Bryan College. She’s the author of “Reflections on Art History,” “The Art of Ancient History,” “Draw Your Way Into the Woods,” and others. When she’s not teaching or painting, she’s planning her next trip to Europe.
