Symposium on The Symposium

Symposium on The Symposium

Plato’s Symposium contains one of the greatest discussions in history on love, wisdom, and, ironically, the cure for a hangover. But, more than just an ancient drinking party, Plato’s dialogue is a masterclass in rhetoric, tackling everything from the nature of love to the challenge of handling controversial ideas with charity. Join us as we host our own symposium on the symposium.

This talk will be given next door to Beow’s at our friends Expedia Cruises. Please grab your drinks and food with us before the event, and rejoin us for discussion afterwards! (Alcohol is not permitted outside of the Beow’s premises.)

TCF: "Learn All Things Afterwards You Will See That Nothing Is Superfluous"

How we teach will always be informed by our view of the human person. In our modern age of fragmentations, education is almost exclusively conceived of in terms of intellectual development. The agenda of such an education is inherently pragmatic. The Christian pedagogical tradition offers resistance to this modern impulse of pragmatizing education. To Patristic and Medieval Christian educators, education pertained not only to intellectual advancement, but also moral and spiritual development. In fact, these three facets were not separate, but united: intellectual improvement came alongside moral and spiritual maturation. One of this most important Medieval thinkers who contributed to the development of this holistic understanding of pedagogy is Hugh of Saint Victor (1096-1141).

In this presentation, Fr. Wesley will argue that Hugh’s innovative and thorough approach to education is informed by a thoroughly Augustinian anthropology. For Hugh, the fall of humanity resulted in the disintegration of the person; redemption, then, entails reintegration. The trivium (grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric) is a bridge to carry the person from God’s works of foundation (creation) to redemption (salvation) by preparing them to read the Scriptures.

Fr. Wesley is the Rector of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Crownsville, Maryland. He has his STM from Nashotah House Theological Seminary where he did his thesis on the Christology of Hugh of Saint Victor. He has been an educator for about a decade, teaching homeschool students and at classical Christian schools. He co-hosts The Sacramentalists Podcast and The Classical Mind Podcast.

TCF: How Can Art Amplify Academics in Classical Education

TCF: How Can Art Amplify Academics in Classical Education

Don’t just add an art class to your classical studies. Let art multiply your efforts by integrating art into academic subjects. Arts integration makes a classical education much richer. Art can make facts memorable and relatable. It engages students through their senses and cultivates creative thinking, and thoughtful art projects spur students to think more deeply about the subjects.

Artist and Classical Educator Courtney Sanford demonstrates how you can integrate fine art activities into academic subjects such as history, literature, and science in the grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric stages of learning.

Courtney Sanford spent 16 years classically educating her own children and tutoring others and writing and designing resources for Classical Conversations and CiRCE Institute. In 2020, she opened the Delightful Art Co., an Online Art School that offers arts-integrated classes, resources, and retreats. She has a Degree in Graphic Design from NCSU and is an adjunct professor of fine arts at Bryan College. She’s the author of “Reflections on Art History,” “The Art of Ancient History,” “Draw Your Way Into the Woods,” and others. When she’s not teaching or painting, she’s planning her next trip to Europe.

TCF Series: Seeing the Past: The Wonders of the James Webb Space Telescope

Since astronomy is one of the Seven Liberal Arts and Sciences of the classical and medieval world, it is appropriate to discuss current events in astronomy. No event is more important and game-changing than the James Webb Space Telescope, which is rewriting astrophysics as we know it. Marc Fusco (Thales Academy, NC State, NASA) will be discussing the telescope and some of its groundbreaking discoveries.

Marc Fusco has earned three degrees in Medieval and Renaissance Literature and History, and an MS in Space Science. He taught Shakespeare, and Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Arizona State University and The University of North Carolina; in the Engineering School at Duke University; and currently teaches literature and space-related subjects at North Carolina State University. He worked for NASA for 10 years and worked as a commercial space consultant, and is currently one of North Carolina’s NASA Ambassadors. His day job is teaching literature and history to junior high students at the Thales Academy’s Raleigh campus, and is a passionate advocate of classical education.
